GREEN POOL RECOVERY
Turn a green, cloudy or neglected pool back into clear, swimmable water.
A green pool usually means algae has taken over, and once it starts, it spreads fast. Adding more chlorine alone rarely fixes it when the filter, circulation and water balance are all working against you.
YardSpring Pools provides green pool cleanup throughout North Atlanta. Our green to clean pool service kills the algae, clears the water and rebalances the chemistry so your pool is clean, clear and safe to swim in again.

WHY IS MY POOL GREEN?
Green pool water is almost always algae. It grows when chlorine drops too low for too long, especially in warm weather, after heavy rain or when the pump and filter aren’t running enough.
Algae uses up chlorine as it grows, so a pool can go from slightly hazy to fully green in just a few days. The longer it sits, the more the algae clogs the filter and clings to walls, steps and corners.
A professional green-to-clean service tackles every part of the problem at once: the algae, the debris, the filter and the water chemistry.
SIGNS YOU NEED A GREEN-TO-CLEAN
A pool doesn’t have to be swamp green to need help. These signs mean algae is growing faster than your routine can keep up with.
Water with a green, teal or yellow-green tint means algae is already growing, even if you can still see the floor.
When the water is so green or cloudy you can’t see the main drain, the pool isn’t safe to swim in.
Green or dark patches on walls, steps and corners that come back after brushing point to algae that needs a full treatment.
If you keep adding chlorine and it disappears or the water doesn’t improve, algae or high stabilizer may be using it up.
A pool that sat closed, uncovered or unattended for weeks can turn into a swamp of algae, leaves and debris.
A slimy feel on walls and steps is often the first sign of algae, before the water turns fully green.
ALGAE TYPES
Not all algae is the same. Identifying the type helps us choose the right treatment and brushing plan.
Green algae is the most common type. It floats in the water and clings to surfaces, turning the pool anywhere from hazy green to deep swamp green.
It usually responds well to proper shocking, brushing and filtration once the water is balanced.

Mustard, or yellow, algae looks like yellow-brown dust in shady areas and on walls. It brushes off easily but settles back if not fully treated.
It often needs higher chlorine levels, extra brushing and cleaning of pool tools and accessories to keep it from returning.

Black algae forms dark spots with roots that dig into plaster. It’s the toughest type to remove and often survives normal shocking.
It takes aggressive brushing with a steel brush where the surface allows, targeted treatment and follow-up visits.

OUR PROCESS
Clearing a green pool takes more than a bucket of shock. We follow a process that fixes the cause, not just the color.
We test chlorine, pH, alkalinity and stabilizer, check the pump and filter, and remove leaves and large debris so the treatment can work.
We get the pump running, clean or backwash the filter, and balance pH so chlorine can work at full strength against the algae.
We raise and hold chlorine at the level needed to kill the algae, based on your water’s stabilizer level, and brush the walls, floor and steps.
As dead algae settles and the filter loads up, we vacuum the pool and clean the filter again so the water can finish clearing.
Once the water is clear, we rebalance the chemistry, confirm chlorine is holding and tell you what caused the bloom and how to prevent it.
WHAT CAUSED IT?
Most green pools are a water-chemistry problem. Low chlorine, heat, rain and debris let algae grow, and a proper green-to-clean treatment brings the water back.
Sometimes equipment is the real cause:
✓
The pump isn’t running or runs too few hours
✓
The filter is damaged or can’t hold pressure
✓
The pool isn’t circulating properly
✓
A heater or salt cell isn’t working
✓
Dead algae keeps coming back through the returns
If we find an equipment problem during cleanup, we’ll explain it and recommend the right repair so the pool doesn’t turn green again.
LOCAL POOL CONDITIONS
Hot, humid North Atlanta summers are ideal for algae. Summer storms dilute chlorine and wash in dirt, and heavy spring pollen and fall leaves add even more for algae to feed on.
A pool can turn green in days after a vacation, a storm or a few missed treatments. Pools that sat closed over winter or on a home that changed hands often need a full cleanup before they can be used.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
How long does it take to clear a green pool? A lightly green pool can often clear in a few days. A dark green or swamp pool can take a week or more.
Timing depends on:
✓
How green the water is and how long it sat
✓
How much debris is in the pool
✓
The type of algae
✓
Stabilizer (CYA) level in the water
✓
Filter type and condition
✓
Pump run time and circulation
We give you an honest timeline after testing the water and checking your equipment, and we keep working until the water is clear and holding chlorine.
DO YOU HAVE TO DRAIN IT?
Most green pools can be cleared with the water in place. Treating the water is usually faster and cheaper than draining and refilling.
Draining may make sense when stabilizer is very high, the pool is packed with debris, or the water has been neglected so long that treating it isn’t practical.
Algae can leave stains in plaster after the water clears. If brushing doesn’t remove them, see Pool Acid Wash.
KEEP IT CLEAR
Clearing a green pool fixes the problem. Keeping it clear is about steady chlorine, balanced water and a clean filter every week.
Regular service catches low chlorine, rising stabilizer and filter problems before they turn into another algae bloom, especially during hot weather and storm season.

WHY CALL A PROFESSIONAL?
The right chlorine level, brushing plan and filtration clear the water faster than guesswork.
We test and balance the water so chemicals work and aren’t wasted.
Cleaning the filter during cleanup keeps it from clogging and protects the pump.
Green water hides the bottom and can harbor bacteria. We get it back to safe, swimmable water.

GREEN POOL CLEANUP FAQ
Why is my pool green?
Algae. It grows when chlorine stays too low, often after hot weather, heavy rain, missed treatments or poor circulation. High stabilizer or a clogged filter can make it harder for chlorine to keep up.
Is it safe to swim in a green pool?
No. Green water can hide the bottom of the pool and can harbor bacteria. Wait until the water is clear and chlorine and pH are back in range.
How long does it take to clear a green pool?
A lightly green pool can often clear in a few days. A dark green or neglected swamp pool can take a week or more, depending on debris, algae type and your filter.
Can you clean a green pool without draining it?
Usually not. Most green pools can be cleared by treating the water. Draining may make sense if stabilizer is very high or the pool is too far gone to treat practically.
What kills pool algae the fastest?
Keeping chlorine at the right level for your stabilizer, brushing, running the filter continuously and cleaning it as it loads up. There’s no single quick fix; it’s doing all of these together.
How much does green pool cleanup cost?
It depends on how green the pool is, its size, the amount of debris and how many visits it takes. We provide an estimate after seeing the pool.
Why does my pool keep turning green?
Algae can come back if chlorine drops, stabilizer is too high, the filter wasn’t fully cleaned or algae survived in corners and accessories. We clean the filter and rebalance the water to prevent that.
Can a green pool attract mosquitoes?
Yes. Standing green water can become a breeding spot for mosquitoes, which is one more reason not to let a neglected pool sit.
