YOUR POOLβS FILTRATION SYSTEM
While your circulation system runs, the filter captures material that would otherwise remain in the water. Dirt, pollen, oils and organic debris gradually collect inside it.
As that buildup increases, it can restrict water flow and reduce filtration performance. You may notice higher pressure, weaker circulation or water that is harder to keep clear.
Appropriate cleaning removes accumulated material so the filter can do its job more effectively. It also provides an opportunity to check its condition and identify visible wear that routine pool care may not reveal.
KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS
Changes in pressure, flow and water clarity can point to a filter that needs attention. They can also have other causes, so the goal is to understand what your system needs before assuming cleaning is the only answer.
A reading above your filterβs normal clean operating pressure can indicate increased resistance. Compare readings under similar operating conditions rather than relying on a single number.
Pool returns that feel weaker than usual may signal restricted circulation. A loaded filter is one possible cause, but other parts of the system may need attention too.
Reduced filtration can leave suspended material in the pool. If water clarity remains poor, the filter should be considered alongside chemistry and circulation.
Material coming back through the returns may indicate an internal filter problem. Cleaning alone may not resolve it if a component is damaged.
If keeping the water clear seems to require more filtration time than before, it may be time to evaluate filter performance and overall pool conditions.
These conditions can increase the amount of material captured by the filter and create a need for attention sooner than usual.
FILTER SYSTEM EXPERIENCE
Different filters need different maintenance. We tailor service to the filtration system, its condition and the manufacturerβs requirements.
Cartridge filters collect debris on pleated elements inside the housing. As material builds up, the available filtration surface can become restricted.
Service involves removing and cleaning the elements using an appropriate method, then checking for visible wear or damage. Cleaning addresses buildup; damaged elements may need separate replacement.
β
Debris embedded in the pleats
β
Elevated pressure or restricted flow
β
Torn material or cracked end caps
Diatomaceous earth, or DE, filters use fine filtration media supported by internal elements to capture particles from the water.
Deeper service includes cleaning accessible internal components, inspecting their condition and reassembling the system. DE media is replenished as required for the specific filter and service performed.
β
Buildup on grids or other internal elements
β
Torn fabric or damaged manifolds
β
Pressure changes or reduced filtration performance
Sand filters pass water through a bed of filtration media. Maintenance may involve backwashing or other care appropriate to the filterβs condition; it does not follow the same cleaning process as removable cartridges.
If performance remains poor, the system may need further evaluation to determine whether media cleaning, a sand change or another service is appropriate.
β
Poor clarity or frequent backwashing
β
Compacted media or uneven water paths through the media
β
Sand returning to the pool, which may indicate an internal problem
WHAT WE DO
The details depend on your filter. Cartridge and DE service may involve opening the housing and cleaning internal elements, while sand-filter maintenance may use backwashing or other methods appropriate to the system.
We identify the filter and prepare the system for the work required. When internal access is needed, the system is shut down and pressure is relieved before the housing is opened, following the equipmentβs service requirements.
We assess accessible components relevant to the service. For cartridge and DE filters, this may include elements, grids, manifolds, seals and O-rings. Visible wear or damage is noted so it can be addressed appropriately.
Cartridges or DE elements are cleaned using methods suited to the equipment and buildup. Sand systems receive the appropriate maintenance for their condition. The aim is to remove collected material and support effective filtration and flow.
Opened components are reassembled and accessible seals are checked. DE systems receive the appropriate media recharge when required. Sand replacement or additional component work is identified separately from routine cleaning.
After service, we observe pressure, circulation and visible signs of leaks. If the filter still shows signs of a problem, we explain what we found and recommend any additional evaluation needed.
CLEANING OR REPAIR?
Cleaning can help when accumulated material is restricting filtration. It cannot fix a cracked housing, torn filter element or damaged internal component.
Further evaluation may be needed when we find:
β
Damaged cartridges, DE grids or manifolds
β
Leaking seals, valves or filter housings
β
A faulty pressure gauge
β
Sand or other filter media returning to the pool
β
Pressure or flow concerns that remain after cleaning
If maintenance reveals a possible mechanical issue, we will explain the concern and recommend the next step. Dedicated diagnostics, repairs and replacements are separate from filter cleaning.
LOCAL FILTRATION DEMANDS
North Atlanta pools can collect pollen, leaves and storm debris as conditions change throughout the year. Much of the smaller material ends up in the filtration system.
A filter may need attention sooner during heavy debris periods than it does under lighter conditions. Monitoring performance helps keep maintenance responsive to what your pool is actually collecting.
FILTER MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
There is no single cleaning interval that fits every residential pool. Your filter type, equipment guidance and actual operating conditions all matter.
Factors that influence timing include:
β
Filter type and size relative to the pool
β
Swimming activity and surrounding landscaping
β
Pollen, storms and other debris
β
Recent algae problems
β
Changes in pressure and water flow
β
The condition of filter elements or media
A calendar reminder can help you plan, but performance and the manufacturerβs maintenance guidance should also shape the schedule. YardSpring Pools can recommend an approach based on your specific filter and pool conditions.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR SYSTEM
A pressure reading is most useful when you know how the system normally operates with a clean filter. Pump settings and system configuration can affect that reading, so comparisons should be made under similar conditions.
Rising pressure can indicate increasing resistance through the filter. Unusually low pressure or reduced flow may point to a circulation issue elsewhere.
The gauge is one piece of information, not a diagnosis on its own. If pressure or flow changes significantly, have the system evaluated using the filter manufacturerβs guidance rather than assuming that cleaning will resolve the cause.
COMPLETE POOL CARE
Filter cleaning addresses the material collected inside the filtration system. Routine pool maintenance manages the poolβs ongoing cleaning and water-care needs between deeper services.
Both matter. A clean filter cannot make up for unresolved chemistry or circulation problems, and routine pool care cannot keep an overloaded filter working effectively indefinitely.

WHY CLEAN THE FILTER?
Removing collected material can reduce restriction caused by buildup inside the filter.
Appropriate cleaning helps keep filtration surfaces or media ready to capture material from circulating water.
Maintaining the filter helps the circulation system operate without unnecessary resistance from accumulated debris.
When service involves internal access, inspection provides an opportunity to notice damaged or deteriorating components.
WHEN TO CALL YardSpring Pools
You do not need to know the exact cause of a filtration problem to ask for help. Filter service may be a useful next step if:

Your cartridges are overdue for a thorough cleaning
β
Your DE filter needs deeper maintenance
β
Your sand filter is not performing as expected
β
Your pool recently dealt with algae or heavy debris

PROFESSIONAL POOL CARE
Professional filter maintenance considers the filter as part of the poolβs circulation system. That means looking at accumulated material, accessible components and how the system operates after service.
YardSpring Pools focuses on the maintenance your filter needs and clear communication about what we find. If cleaning addresses the buildup, we complete that work. If visible damage or continued performance concerns suggest something more, we explain the issue and recommend the appropriate next step.

POOL FILTER CLEANING FAQ
How do I know when my pool filter needs cleaning?
Higher pressure than the normal clean baseline, reduced flow and changes in water clarity can indicate that the filter needs attention. Heavy debris or a recent algae problem may also increase its workload. These signs can have other causes, so the systemβs condition should guide the service.
Do you clean cartridge pool filters?
Yes. Cartridge service includes removing and cleaning the elements using an appropriate method and inspecting them for visible wear or damage. Damaged elements may need replacement rather than additional cleaning.
Do you clean DE pool filters?
Yes. YardSpring Pools services DE filtration systems with cleaning, inspection and reassembly appropriate to the filter. DE media is replenished as required for the equipment and service performed.
Do sand filters need to be cleaned?
Yes. Sand filters commonly use backwashing to remove accumulated material. Depending on performance and media condition, further maintenance or a sand change may be appropriate. Sand returning to the pool can also indicate an internal component problem that needs evaluation.
How often should my filter be professionally cleaned?
Timing depends on filter type, manufacturer guidance, pool use, debris exposure and system performance. YardSpring Pools can recommend an approach for your pool rather than applying one interval to every filter.
Can a dirty filter cause cloudy water?
A loaded filter can contribute to poor clarity, but cloudy water may also involve chemistry, algae or circulation problems. Cleaning helps address filter buildup; it is not automatically the complete solution.
Can a dirty filter damage my pool pump?
A heavily loaded filter can restrict circulation, but a dirty filter alone does not establish that the pump is damaged. Significant changes in pressure or flow call for evaluation of the circulation system and the cause of the restriction.
